Mental Skills in Action

Hello! Today we are going to share links to stories of athletes using mental skills in different scenarios.

  1. Adam Thielan re-focusing tool - Adam Thielan discusses the reason why he will make an imaginary flushing motion as a way to forget a past mistake and focus. https://www.stack.com/a/the-weird-ritual-adam-thielen-uses-to-flush-bad-plays-and-regain-his-focus/
  2. Russell Wilson pre-game imagery routine – After being put on the IR, Russell Wilson was running a 2-minute drill alone during pre-game. Objectively, this is a good way to continue to “flex” the mental muscle when not able to do it on the field. Subjectively, society saw it as an “attention grab” and generally had a negative response to it. This is an example of the judgement some may face as an athlete, which adds to another layer of the mental game. https://www.stack.com/a/the-weird-ritual-adam-thielen-uses-to-flush-bad-plays-and-regain-his-focus/
  3. Aaron Donald Self-Talk: This might be one of the best examples of psyching oneself up while avoiding negative self-talk. Throughout this video, Aaron Donald uses a handful of short statements that have good directives such as “be great” “this is what you’ve worked for”. Aaron Donald avoids using don’t statements (don’t mess up) and stays with more neutral statements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoaJVJHRLOI
