Team working on a complete team mental skills training program

What is Mental Performance?

One of the most common questions we hear is “what is mental performance?”. Well today, we’re going to answer that question!

When we “perform”; whether it be in practice or in-game, or at work or school, it is usually a combination of the mind and the body. Mental performance focuses on the “mind” and how to sharpen the aspects of the mental game to promote better performance. Some things are as simple as organizing a daily schedule to maximize every day, others are a little more complex like learning imagery techniques and how to apply them effectively.

One thing that we make sure to focus on here at Mental Barbell when working with clients, is the fact that our mentality or mindset works like a venn diagram in a sense. We all have different parts of our lives such as sport, work, school, and family/friends and when you transition from one aspect to another (going from class to practice) your mentality comes with you. Similar to a venn diagram, aspects of our lives overlap with each other and can effect each other as well. When looking at an end product such as performance, we need to consider the other aspects of our lives (the other sections in the venn diagram) and the influence that may or may not have had.

Another concept we believe in is that the client is the “master of themselves”. Our roles as Mental Performance Consultant (MPC) is to show you the abundance of “tools” or mental skills we have available and help you try them out until we find and master the skills. The techniques we use to help out clients are developed from an individualized perspective. There is no pre-made program that clients are made to follow and promised results at the end of it. After getting to learn about a client and understand why they came to us is when one of our MPC’s can start to develop a plan as to what “tools” could help the client.

These two concepts addressed today are the premise of how we approach working with our clients. If you have any questions or comments please reach out to us! We would love to answer some questions on our blogs or on our videos coming soon as well!
